en: The serpentine dance is a form of dance that became popular throughout the United States and Europe in the 1890s and a staple of stage shows and early film. The Serpentine is an evolution of the skirt dance and was originated by Loïe Fuller. Loïe Fuller's dance inspired many painters and sculpters, some of them depicting just the huge veils on a stick. The 'Isis wings' that bellydancers use these days can be seen as a modern version.
